Well, to say I was sorely disappointed in this sequel was an understatement. WOOF. The first one was so well done that this one clearly had way too much going on. The best part was the children's interactions with the ghosts. Then there's that. There were TOO MANY ghosts. The Nun PLUS The Crooked Man PLUS Old Man Jenkins over here in the chair. I was really very sad with how this one turned out in comparison to the first film.
Anyways let's talk about the lore behind the film.
This sequel is based upon the Enfield Haunting in the summer and winter of 1977. The thing about the story behind this film is that it wasn't cool enough for Hollywood, so they made it as edgy as possible and really took the magic out of this story.
What ACTUALLY happened was that shit would fly around, including the kids being launched from bed supposedly, and then there would be weird noises.
"...there was no exorcism-like practice from the Warrens. In 1979, two years after they began, the hauntings abruptly stopped, though the family maintains they did nothing to stop them."
The Warrens weren't even wanted at the scene of this haunting and they were repeatedly turned away from the home by the family. Go figure.
So instead, Hollywood decided to write about a bunch of demons and ghosts that weren't even reported to be part of this story, and then have some wild loophole that they were all being controlled by the same big bad demon behind the scenes, of which they have a big showdown at the end.
Personal opinion: if the production team had leaned more into just one ghost (similar to the first film) and dropped the multiple-hauntings-happening-at-the-same-time thing, maybe it would have resonated more with audiences (and myself) just like the first one.
