All I can say about this gorgeous film is that it should be studied in film classes. Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit.
I've seen it a few times now, but the very silly, yet poetic approach to loss, self-hate and self-love, as well as grief, really got me going on this one.
How better to deal with grief and loss than to carry around its rotting corpse on your back across the world while it farts at every opportunity it can to fuck up your mojo? And then of course you learn to live with it and fall in love with it and yourself again, because that's how your heart grows around the pain. And then when you're confronted with that original trauma again, things are totally different. Your priorities have changed. And honestly. That's the point.
You live. You learn. You grow. You put a cork up its ass.
So this film will absolutely make you cackle, then hit you right in the feels. Dano & Radcliffe, oh my GOD, stellar performances. Harry Potter who???
Also, just throwing this out there, Paul Dano has really been hitting home runs in his recent roles (see here).
The soundtrack is amazing too.
I think what I love most about this film has to be all of it. The performances were great, the music is sooo intentional. The plot and writing were top tier, and the direction was successful. The story did exactly what I wanted it to do. I cried, I laughed, and most of all I was fucking invested. This story is one we can all relate to, in the most abstract funny metaphor we possibly can.
Please go watch this film, and then make everyone you know watch it.
