This one was so incredibly FUN. I love that it was so bad it became great. Literally. M3GAN was so enjoyable to watch not only for the fun scares, but for the hilarious uncanny valley aspect of it. Both child-actors in the film were incredible, and made the fun and fancy-free spooks enjoyable and believable. Personally, I thought they were better than the adults in the film. Violet McGraw killed it as Cady, and Amie Donald was incredibly enjoyable to watch as M3GAN. McGraw's Cady was as any troubled child is- petulant and selfiss, and comes out as the hero in the end, and Donald's movements as M3GAN were perfectly believable as robotic and violent.
The use of a prosthetic face and hands for M3GAN was the right choice. It created the fabricated look that M3GAN needs, and allowed the viewers to see her as the psycho-killer robot she was, instead of the movement artist that Donald is turning out to be.
Allison Williams, known for her role in Get Out (2017), as Cady's Aunt Gemma is unbearably tactless in this film, which is exactly what her character is meant to be. Williams' Gemma is the socially-averse, child-averse, work-obsessed techie that has no clue what to do with Cady, and I understood every moment. Gemma is a sucky parent, but she isn't meant to see Cady as her child, I don't think. She needs to see Cady as her equal, and her implementation of M3GAN into Cady's life as a recovery and healing tool is an absolute disaster. Perfect. Williams' Gemma is perfectly unlikeable in every way - KUDOS to Williams for a stellar performance!
All of the adults in this film, except maybe for Cole & Tess, are unbearable and heartless, especially Ronny Chieng's David. I appreciate his effort, but Ronny didn't sell David to me as a believable character, but in the entire scope of this film, that is the least of its incredibly bizarre choices. For example, M3GAN's singing Titanium had me in stitches, and then her stealing a random Lambo made my night, officially.
This silly little film is perfect for those who like scary-adjacent films, instead of something genuinely frightening. Available on a few streaming platforms, M3GAN, is available to watch now. In addition, an Unrated Director's Cut is now available with more gore and profanity provided for your viewing pleasure- that being said, it is not much different from the original.
Cheers!
