Baby Reindeer (2024)

Good Evening Folks,

So this one is a MUST-WATCH, 10/10, FIVE STARS for SURE. This was incredibly well done- well written, well acted, well produced, etc. Every character was so REAL and raw in the best ways. On Netflix since April 2024, Baby Reindeer is an autobiographical mini-series about a stalker, and the victim with a very complicated relationship with his past, present, and future.

Honestly, I was shocked by how much I loved this series. The vulnerability written into these characters and scenes was very artfully done, and not once did I feel disconnected from Donny's struggles. I was held at the edge of my seat the entire time and binged it in two nights, though I'm sure many did it in one.

The reason this show really struck me as a well-done piece of art is that it didn't shy away from the most difficult of conversations, no matter how complicated or "undesirable" they may have seemed, they were all conversations that needed to be had. This show should be required reading for everyone, in my opinion, as a lesson in the school of hard knocks, but also in the school of acceptance and the school of the human condition. The duality of man, I would say. The need to both love and hate and the need to be free and trapped at the same time to not only discover some form of fulfillment but also to rail against something in order to be declared righteous in some way. All of that was a very dramatic way of saying that sometimes life happens to you, but sometimes, we happen to ourselves.

I think the other part of this show that really hit me hard was that this vulnerability was coming from a man later in life discovering his sexuality and dealing with sexual abuse being inflicted upon him from multiple angles, and not knowing how to be himself anymore. The difficulty he has being intimate has become the crux of his personality towards the end of this series, and seeing someone being so open about that kind of hurt was striking to me. Impressive and bold even, and I hope many men get to see this show as soon as possible, so those who it may pertain to know that they're not alone and that they may be more seen and heard than they know.

All of the performances were incredible, honestly, and to know that there is a true story behind it all is truly shocking.

"Scottish performer Richard Gadd is as the writer, creator, and star of Baby Reindeer, and the Netflix series is the culmination of almost a decade of work." - Harper's Bazaar

He stars in the show he wrote about his own life, as he says, the worst part of his life, and he discusses why this is important. “All I ever wanted to do was capture something complicated about the human condition. That we all make mistakes. That no person is ever good or bad. That we are all lost souls looking for love in our own weird way.” - Gadd
